A. B. Van Benthuysen was prominent in the early ranger companies of the Republic of Texas, having been an officer in a volunteer company during the early months of 1836. He served as 1st Lieutenant in Capt. Bowyer's Harrisburg County ranger company in Houston, which was formed in June 1837. He survived the Stone Houses fight of November 10, 1837 against a band of Kichai Indians, retreating through hostile Indian territory which the other remaining survivors. |
