8 X 11 framed receipt for a horse dated June 25, 1837, to be used in the Ranging Service. The receipt reads: "June 25th,1837 of Mr.Ruth one grey horse destined for the Ranging service to be used on the frontier in Capt. Bowyer's company of mounted gunmen, this is [?] valued at fifty dollars, and is to be returned if possible if not returned Mr. Ruth is to recieve his full value. - A.B. Van Benthuysen, First Lieut. of mounted gunmen" The back reads "Receipt for horse in the Ranging Service". Captain Bowyer and First Lt. Van Benthuyen served in the Harrisburg (now Harris) County regiment formed on June 12th 1837. |
