Description |
Simple wooden chair with slat back and rawhide seat - allegedly Sam Houston once sat in this chair. According to account found written on a piece of paper found on chair: "Charles A. Patterson and Sarah V. Kestler, Concord, N.C., were married in 1856, and came to Texas to settle around the present city of Bryan. This chair was on the front porch of their small humble home. One hot summer day sometime between1859 and 1861 Gov. Samuel Houston, with his aids, very thirsty and tired, noticed a cool well of water in the yard. They stopped and asked for a drink. Houston sat in this chair as he drank his refreshing water and chatted with Mr. Patterson. The raw hide seat is supposed to be the one upon which Houston sat. The chair has been in the possession of the families of Mollie D. Patterson Potts, deceased, and her younger sister, Sallie W. Patterson Brogdon, Regis Retirement Home, since the death of their father in 1911. John A. Potts, 2830 Gorman, Waco, presented the chair to the Fisher Museum in the fall of 1968." |
