Enlisted, Texas Rangers Company "A", September 18, 1906 Transferred, Company "B", 1909 Resigned, April 1, 1909 Special Ranger, April 15, 1916-1917 Special Ranger, May 17, 1918-January 14, 1919 Tom, son of Robert Emmet and Margaret, was born in Oak Hill, Texas. Tom attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, with his brother Dudley. Leaving school early Tom traveled the country holding various jobs in Oklahoma and California. He enlisted in the Rangers from 1905 to 1909 and served under such notable Captains as John R. Hughes and J.A Brooks. Tom resigned from the Rangers and worked for the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific Railroads as a special agent. Tom continued his long career in law enforcement working of the Federal Bureau of Investigations from 1917 to 1927, solving many notorious crimes, such as the Osage Murders and fraud in the Atlanta Penitentiary system. Tom also served twenty-four years in the Federal penitentiary system as Warden for both Leavenworth and La Tuna Penitentiaries. In a 1931 Leavenworth prison break Tom was held hostage by armed prisoners and suffered a gun shot wound. After his retirement from the penitentiary system Tom served on a three-man board for Texas prisons and paroles. |
