J. B. Wheatley was born June 14, 1866 in Ellis County, Texas to Pierce and Terry Wheatley. He worked as a County Assessor among other things while residing in the Austin area. Wheatley also served as Sheriff of Potter and Moore Counties in the Panhandle, and was Chief of Police at Amarillo before enlisting in the Rangers. Wheatley enlisted as a Ranger in Co. B on Feb. 15, 1921, and transferred to HQ Co. on Sept. 1, 1921. He reenlisted as a Sergeant in HQ Co. on Feb. 15, 1923, eventually transferring to Co. C on Sept. 1, 1925, and transferring back to HQ Co. on May 15, 1927. He reenlisted Feb. 15, 1929, remaining a Sergeant, until he was promoted to Captain of Co. C on May 18, 1932 after the death of Capt. Light Townsend created a vacancy. Records indicate that Wheatley resigned his position on Jan. 16, 1933, upon the inauguration of Gov. Ma Fergusion. He later reenlisted as a Private in Headquarters Co. of the Texas Rangers on Feb. 5, 1935, working in the new Narcotics Division in Austin. He was 66 years old by that time. He promoted to Sergeant on May 1, 1937, and was quickly promoted to Captain on Sept. 1, 1937 |
