Notes	R. D. Shumate was born on April 24, 1877 in Jacksboro, Texas to Isaac and Elizabeth Shumate. He was a farmer and peace officer before he became a Special Ranger in 1918. Not long after, he enlisted in the Texas Rangers as a Private on Feb. 4, 1919. He was apparently discharged and reenlisted in Co. B on June 20, 1919, noting that he was "reenlisted under new law". He transferred to Co. A on July 1, 1920, and resigned Aug. 31, 1920. He later enlisted in Co. C on Jan. 6, 1922. He transferred to Co. E on Nov. 1, 1924, then was discharged Feb. 21, 1925.
