Notes |
Daniel Webster Roberts, Texas Ranger, was born in Winston County, Mississippi, on October 10, 1841, one of the eight children of Alexander (Buck) and Sabra Roberts. In his later years he remarked, "father followed up the frontier, and I was reared, and almost rocked in the cradle of Texas warfare." After serving during the Civil War, for the Texas Militia and Texas Cavalry, Dan Roberts was commissioned as second lieutenant of Company D, Frontier Battalion. He experienced many Indian fights, and was appointed Captain of Frontier Battalion Company D in 1875. He was given permission that his wife Luvenia could live in camp with him. Mrs. Roberts spent six years in camps, recording her memoirs in "A Woman’s Reminiscences of Six Years in Camp With the Texas Rangers", first published in 1928 and reprinted by State House Press of Austin in 1987. Roberts resigned from the Rangers in 1881 or 1882. Roberts and his wife are both buried in the state cemetery in Austin. |
