Notes	Sidney "Sid" Clement Merchant was born in Haskell County, Texas on August 13, 1933 to Max and Mary Merchant. He graduated from Happy High School then enlisted in the United States Navy as a gunners mate aboard the USS Stickell. Merchant began his law enforcement career with the Midland Police Department before joining the Texas Department of Public Safety as a State Trooper. Sid was first assigned to West Texas before being promoted to Texas Ranger in 1965. Sid was the Texas Ranger assigned to Abilene, where he served until his retirement in 1988. Sid and Sandy Merchant were married August 8, 1963 beginning their married life in Odessa, Tex., then moved to Abilene and settled in Potosi, Tex. where they lived for 25 years. They eventually moved to Oklahoma to be close to family, and Sid passed away on April 12, 2009 in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
