C. G. Memminger was born on January 9, 1803 to Eberhardina and Gottfried Memminger in Germany. His father passed away shortly after his birth. Memminger and his mother emigrated to Charleston at some point before her death in 1807. After living in an orphanage for several years, Memminger was adopted by Thomas Bennett at the age of 11. Memminger then studied at South Carolina College, graduating at the age of 16. He went on to become a lawyer and politician, serving in the South Carolina State Legislature as the Head of the Finance Committee from 1836 to 1852 and again from 1854 to 1860. After the election of President Abraham Lincoln in 1860, Memminger supported secession and co-authored the "Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union." In February 1861, Memminger was chosen as the First Secretary of the Treasury of the Confederate States by Jefferson Davis. Memminger served in this position until his resignation in 1864, and was depicted on the Confederate $5 bill. Memminger remained active in politics for the remainder of his life, passing away on March 7, 1888 in Charleston, South Carolina. |
