Glen Henry McLaughlin was born February 3, 1914, in Abilene, Tex., to John Henry and Clara Elizabeth McLaughlin. He graduated from High school in Clayton, NM, received his B.A. at Hardin Simmons University in Chemistry and Physics. Upon graduation, he taught science for two years and then worked as a bacteriologist for the Texas State Health Dept. before beginning his career with the Texas Dept. of Public Safety in 1939. His first work was a chemist and toxicologist in the crime lab. In 1945 he became Chief of Identification and Criminal Records and Director of the labs. In 1957 he was promoted to Chief of Personnel, Training and Staff Services and then became Chief of Administration in 1973. He retired from DPS in 1977, but continued his career in law enforcement as the executive secretary of the Texas Police Association for 12 years. He helped establish the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education in 1965 and was chairman for eight years. During this time he helped establish the Law Enforcement Management Institute and the Texas Peace Officers' Memorial. He received a citation from the Texas State Legislature in 1948 for his work in the Texas City disaster and again in 1989 from both the House and the Senate for his 50 years of service in law enforcement and his many contributions to the advancement of the law enforcement profession. He was a member of the International Assoc. of Identification, served as president for one year. He was a founding member of the International Assoc. for Automobile Theft Investigators, served as president for one year. Also a member of the International Assoc. of Chiefs of Police, Sheriffs Assoc. of Texas, Austin Society for Public Administrators and Texas Public Employees Assoc. He received many awards and recognitions throughout his life, the most recent was a Lifetime Achievement Award from TCLEOSE on March 2, 2007. He married Mary Evelyn Ivy in November 1939 and began their life together in Austin. He passed away in Austin, Tex., on Thursday, March 22, 2007. |
