Jim Newton Geer was born in Manchester, Texas. He entered the U.S. Army in 1918 and served as a Military Police for the 323 Aerial Squadron stationed at Kelly Field in San Antonio and was honorably discharged in 1919. Jim began his career as a civilian lawman in 1922 as a deputy sheriff in Red River County. He served as sheriff from 1935 to 1945 when he became a Texas Ranger. One of his most notable case as a deputy sheriff was a standoff between law officers and outlaw Charles Frazier who, among other crimes was wanted for murder and robbery. Frazier eventually surrendered due to Geer's skillful aim. Although he once told a reporter, "I had rather get shot myself than wound or kill an innocent person." Jim was appointed a criminal investigator assigned to Headquarters Company in 1945 and later transferred to Company A and then to Company B. During his time with the Rangers, Geer worked many cases including the Texarkana Phantom Murders, general cattle rustling and narcotic crimes. Geer passed away in Wichita Falls, Texas, after thirty-three years of law enforcement service. He was noted as a "fine officer and a fine gentlemen." |
