Notes |
James Monroe Fox was born Nov. 19, 1866 in Houston, Missouri to James and Martha Fox. According to service records, Fox served as a Ranger Captain of Co. C from Oct. 5, 1911 to Oct. 5, 1913. He then was enlisted as Captain of Co. B from Feb. 1, 1915 until he resigned on Feb. 11, 1918. His resignation followed the aftermath of the Porvenir massacre (Jan. 29, 1918) in which 15 local men were killed. While Fox was not present, his men went to Porvenir on his orders. His company was disbanded and Fox tendered his resignation. Fox later reenlisted as a Captain of Co. A on June 6, 1925, and resigned again March 31, 1927. This coincided with the Governorship of Miriam Ferguson. Finally, Fox was commissioned as a Special Ranger from Feb. 19, 1934 and discharged Jan. 22, 1935. He passed away about 2 years later on Feb. 11, 1937 in Austin, Texas. |
