J. W. or J. Walter Durbin was the eldest of the three Durbin brothers who were Frontier Battalion Rangers. Born February 7, 1860, J. W. Durbin left for Texas around December 1881, working as a cowboy, carpenter, farmer and stagecoach driver before joining the Texas Rangers. Durbin enlisted in Co. C of the Frontier Battalion on June 5, 1884, working in the Panhandle chasing horse and cattle thieves. The Co. C was transferred to South Texas in Frio County, where he later settled, married, operated a saloon and became Sheriff in Frio County. His brother also served in the Frontier Battalion, as they served briefly together in Co. D. Durbin committed suicide and passed away on September 19, 1916 in San Antonio, Texas. |
