W. Burks was born on January 20, 1925 in Fort Worth, Texas. At a young age he enlisted in the US Navy, serving during WWII from 1942 to 1945. In 1949 he joined the Texas Highway Patrol, stationed in Tyler, Kilgore, and Fort Worth. He promoted to the Texas Rangers in 1958, serving until 1986. He worked primarily in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He attained the rank of Captain, and was involved in the Huntsville Prison Siege in 1974, along with Captain Pete Rogers. Burks passed away on January 8, 1990 and is buried in Fort Worth, Texas.
