"Red" Arnold was born on June 6, 1915 in Longview, Texas. Upon graduating from high school in 1933, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. After being discharged from the Marines in 1937, he joined the Texas Highway Patrol in 1938, with some time spent in the Bureau of Identification and Records. Between 1942 and 1945, Arnold requested leave to serve his country again in the Marines. After WWII he returned to the Highway Patrol, and eventually promoted to the Rangers in 1954. During his Ranger career, he was involved in some of the Lone Star Steel strikes in East Texas, as well as apprehended the suspects of a burglary at the Sam Houston Museum in Huntsville. In 1974, he was selected as the outstanding peace officer by the East Texas Police Officer’s Association. Arnold retired from the Rangers in 1978 after a forty-year career in law enforcement. Following a short illness, Red died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1979, and he was buried in the family cemetery in Arp, Texas. |
