He left the Rangers in 1933 during the tenure of Gov. Miriam "Ma" Ferguson, who fired all the Rangers at that time. He worked as a Deputy Sheriff in Bee County until he rejoined the Rangers in 1935, with the establishment of the Texas Dept. of Public Safety. Allee attained the rank of Captain in 1947 and retired in 1970 in Carrizo Springs. He had followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Alfred Y. Allee, and father, Alonzo W. Allee, who also were Rangers. Allee began receiving national attention in the 1950s when he investigated political corruption in Duval County, which was run by George Parr, the "Duke of Duval". In the 1960s, Allee went to the Rio Grande Valley to break up farmworkers strikes and was accused of brutality against the mostly Mexican-American farmworkers. He denied the charges. "I didn't rough anybody up", he recalled. "I don't know where that stuff was coming from. I was down there doing a job and didn't mishandle any people." |
