Letter addressed to Col. Ben McCulloch from John C. Robertson, Chairman of the Committee of Public Safety. Dated February 10, 1861 at Austin, the letter contains McCulloch's appointment to Colonel of Calvary following Texas' secession from the United States during the early days of the Civil War. Following the adoption of the Texas Ordinance of Secession on February 2, 1861, Robertson was appointed the Chairman for the Committee of Public Safety. Robertson instructs McCulloch on his duties and what to do with the federal troops still in Texas. He mentions General Twiggs, who was hesitant to surrender federal property to the commissioners. Should Twiggs decline to surrender the government property at San Antonio to the commissioners, Benjamin McCulloch was commissioned to take the place by force. |
