Scope & Content |
Original 16 page "Big Chief" spiral-bound notebook belonging to Captain J. A. Brooks. Handwritten on front cover: "story of Captain Scott and Brooks / Capt Brooks / Copy". Written in blue ink, the notebook appears to be in Brooks' hand and describes some of his experiences with the Rangers. Judging by the page numbers, at least the first page may be missing. A transcription of the notebook is attached. The notebook most likely dates to the last few years of his life, when he was living with his son before his death in 1944. Includes a run-in with outlaw Sam Bass, venturing into Indian Territory, fence cutting, etc. Gift of Suzanne Montgomery, the great-granddaughter of Ranger Captain J. A. Brooks. |
