The Second Congress of the Republic of Texas approved a new battalion of mounted riflemen in June 1837, "for the better protection of the northern frontier." The company officers were appointed by President Sam Houston, and instructed to begin recruiting for the new ranging companies immediately. John M. Bowyer was nominated as Captain of the Harrisburg County regiment of Rangers, or mounted gunmen, in Houston, June 12, 1837. A. B. Van Benthuysen was 1st Lieutenant, and Michael Dick was 2nd Liuetenant of the company. Captain Bowyer's company was the first to form, and would later operate in cooperation with the companies of Major William Smith's ranger battalion. (Stephen Moore, Savage Frontier) |
